PI-Mod is an information model for modular, XML-based technical documentation. It is the result of practical applications and is available in the public domain.

Whereas other information models are either too overloaded, offer too few semantic structures, or have been developed individually at a considerable cost, PI-Mod provides a manageable set of pre-defined XML structures that are derived from the typical contents and types of module used in technical documentation. And that's no coincidence: PI-Mod is the result of several successful XML projects in machine and plant construction conducted by Prof. Wolfgang Ziegler from Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences, including a team of Dokuwerk consultants.

Facilitating exchange between companies and suppliers

PI-Mod is based on the idea of a standardized information model that enables companies, suppliers, or individual divisions in a company to exchange modular user and service documentation. Although it was not developed in conjunctionn with an editing system, PI-Mod can easily be implemented in a system of this kind. Various system providers have already implemented PI-Mod in the course of projects or are planning a PI-Mod edition of their editing system.

Comprehensive PI-Mod package is open source

The first freely accessible PI-Mod version 1.0.1 is now available on www.pi-mod.de. In addition to XML-DTD, the PI-Mod package includes an XSL-FO style sheet for PDF publications, a CSS style sheet for XMetaL and comprehensive documentation. A style guide and style sheets for Arbortext Editor and an HTML edition are currently being developed. The PI-Mod package is available as open source software and can be used without having to pay a license fee. That means there is nothing to prevent it being developed further for specific projects.
